The focus of couples counseling is on improving the quality of the relationship for both partners. Couples counseling looks at issues like communication, honesty, shared responsibilities, commitment, and mutual support. Many types of partnership can benefit from couples counseling, including married couples, couples preparing for marriage, cohabiting couples, dating couples, separated couples, and couples preparing for a divorce.
While we will be working towards growth and healing for each of the individuals involved, the priority and focus is on healing the relationship. To that end, I have a "no secrets" approach to working with couples and I believe that for counseling to be effective there needs to be open and honest communication throughout the therapeutic process. Couples are often happily surprised at how non-threatening and safe couples therapy can feel.
